SECOND SKIN Exhibition and Book Release

Presented by Vara Fine Arts and VPL
Curated by Victoria Bartlett and Renée Vara

May 18, 2012 - July 31, 2012
5 Mercer Street
NYC 10013

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 17th, 7-9 pm
With performances by: John Giorno, Hrafnhildur Arnardottir
aka Shoplifter, and Mark Borthwick

VPL and Vara Fine Arts are pleased to announce Second Skin, an exhibition and book co-curated by Victoria Bartlett and Renée Vara, to be held at VPL studio, 5 Mercer Street (at Howard Street).

Second Skin includes works by David Armstrong, Hrafnhildur Arnardottir aka Shoplifter, Mark Borthwick, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Judith Eisler, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Katerina Jebb, John Giorno, Sarah Lucas, Joe Maloney, Adam McEwen, Jessica Mitrani, Jack Pierson, Ugo Rondinone, and Collier Schorr.

Second Skin is a two-part conceptual project that surveys Bartlett's fascination with muscular anatomy and human skin. As often evident in her own designs, Bartlett explores the concepts of corporal dissection, examination and re-assemblage. The compilation of images, which make up the book and the group show, represents the collective consciousness about the contemporary body.

For the publication of INPUT #4: Second Skin, artists were invited to blindly contribute up to six works contemplating corporeality. The curators loosely mimic the Surrealists’ Exquisite Corpse game by assembling the individual artists’ submissions into a singular “body” of work. Covered in latex and subject to touch, wear and decay, the book offers itself as a metaphor for the contemporary body. INPUT#4 (Summer 2012) is a limited edition publication of 150 copies, and features an introductory essay by Chris Townsend.

Special thanks to: 303 Gallery, Berger & Wild, Cheim & Read Gallery, Gladstone Gallery, INVISIBLE-EXPORTS, Proof7, Sadie Coles Gallery.
